Obama’s Health Care Proposal
May 27, 2009A prevalent topic of debate in presidential elections has been how to address this country’s health care shortcomings. With our country’s economic recession, the shortage of employment opportunities has created an even larger pool of individuals and families who are uninsured. To tackle this dilemma, President Obama has proposed a government sponsored alternative to the private health care market. However, many Republicans feel such a proposal will result in too much government intervention in health care, and destroy the current private market.
Essentially, Obama’s government health care alternative would compete directly with the various private insurance companies throughout our country. By subsidizing health care prices with tax payer dollars, the government will be able to offer prices so competitive that any chance for the private sectors to compete are thought to be nearly impossible. It is believed that the private sector would potentially lose up to 90% of its current clients to the Obama’s health plan.
Although it is crucial to provide health care coverage to as many people as possible; what will be the impact of Obama’s health care alternative on doctors and hospitals? Doctors and hospitals are reimbursed by private insurance companies and government offered health care such as Medicare. Currently Medicare reimburses doctors and hospitals at 70-80% of what private health care companies currently payout. If Obama’s alternative is passed, it is feared that doctors and hospitals will not have the financial reimbursement needed to supply coverage for the increased demand of health care services. Some feel they may even have to close up shop.
The bottom line when looking at Obama’s health care proposal is that many private insurance companies worry about how level the playing field will be, and fear that the quality and abundance of health care services will be negatively impacted. Although it is important to create a health care system that is both affordable and accessible to Americans, we cannot undermine the services that are already in place.
