How Affordable Will The Public Option Be?
November 23, 2009With everything that is going on with the current political health care debate, the question still remains how affordable a public option would actually be? Again, this question stems from underlining principles of how insurance functions; i.e., whether or not the number of individuals enrolled in the public health insurance plan would efficiently spread the risk across a large enough membership to help offset higher monthly premiums.
One of the major problems facing the affordability of a public health insurance option is the fact that a current exchange already exists through the private sector, and these insurance carriers have huge nationwide established networks. Is the public option going to contract with these existing networks for service? will they be able to compete with these current networks? Will the pricing be the same? If the public option is unable to enroll enough members, then the cost of high-risk individuals will innately drive up monthly premiums to compensate for the greater medical expenses.
