How Many Hours of Sleep You Need
January 26, 2010At any age, getting enough sleep boosts your overall health. Likewise, too little sleep can leave you drowsy and unable to concentrate, increase your risk for diabetes and heart problems, impair your memory and limit physical performance.
With that being said, how much sleep do you need? Research varies, but a “rule of thumb” consensus has developed based upon age groups. In general:
| Toddlers (1-3 Years) | 12-14 Hours |
| Preschoolers (3-5 Years) | 11-13 Hours |
| School-Aged Children (5-12 Years) | 10-11 Hours |
| Teenagers (13-17) | 8.5 – 9.5 Hours |
| Adults | 7-9 Hours |
| Older Adults | 7-9 Hours |
While the amount of sleep you get is important, so is the quality. Pay attention to your individual needs and see how you feel during the day. If you’re putting in the hours but not getting the rest, you may need to look at external factors that can influence the depth of sleep and restoration you receive at night. You may even wish to speak to a doctor, as they may be able to help identify any underlying causes and help you get a better night’s sleep. Most importantly, be sure to make sleep a priority!
